ABOUT US
Asbury has a long and rich history that
stretches well over 100 years. Asbury began its life as a mission of
First United Methodist Church in 1888. In 1982 the congregation
moved into the present location at 1700 Napa Valley Drive.
Today Asbury is a congregation of 900 members. Asbury has
been "the church that cares" for all these years and
continues to be the "friendliest church" in town.
Asbury is a church with a vision; a vision that God has called
all people to realize the presence of the divine in their lives
and to come together in worship, service and fellowship. As a family
of God, Asbury has dedicated itself to this vision. We invite you
to be a part of this vision with us.
Mission
Our Mission is to make a
difference in the lives of others by making disciples for Jesus
Christ.
Vision
We are called to spread the
Gospel of Jesus Christ and bring new believers into our church family.
We strive to be known for our love and our compassion for others,
expressed by our faith and our actions, reaching out to make a difference
in the lives of those in need in our community, our state and the
world. We will nurture and develop the spiritual health of our members
as a foundation for our ministries.
Core Values
Asbury's core values guide
our members as we strive to make a difference in the lives of others.
They are expectations for what we as a community of believers hold
dear in how we live our lives:
- Evangelism: We are called to spread the Good
News of Jesus Christ to non-believers. "You are the light of the
world - like a city on a mountain, glowing in the night for all
to see. Don't hide your light under a basket! Instead, put it
on a stand and let it shine for all. In the same way, let your
good deeds shine out for all to see, so that everyone will praise
your heavenly Father." Matthew 5:14-16
- Family: We value the loving relationships present
in our families and our church families. We take this love with
us as we serve God. "There are different kinds of service in the
church, but it is the same Lord we are serving. There are different
ways God works in our lives, but it is the same God who does the
work through all of us.Now all of you together are Christ's body,
and each one of you is a separate and necessary part of it." 1
Corinthians 12:5-6, 27
- Spiritual Growth: We believe that Bible Study
and prayer are essential for developing maturity as Christian
disciples and we are better prepared to be Christian examples
for others. "All scripture is inspired by God and is useful to
teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in
our lives. It straightens us out and teaches us to do what is
right. It is God's way of preparing us in every way, fully equipped
for every good thing God wants us to do." 2 Timothy 3:16-17
- Love: The spirit of love is at the very heart
of our desire to make a difference in the lives of others and
to serve God. "This is real love. It is not that we loved God,
but that he loved us and sent his son as a sacrifice to take away
our sins. Dear friends, since God loved us that much, we surely
ought to love each other." 1 John 4:10-11
- Mission : Jesus came into the world to save
those who are lost and established the church to spread the Good
News to the ends of the earth. "Then the king will say to those
on the right, 'Come, you who are blessed by my father, inherit
the Kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world.
For I was hungry, and you fed me. I was thirsty, and you gave
me a drink. I was a stranger, and you invited me into your home.
I was naked, and you gave me clothing. I was sick, and you cared
for me. I was in prison, and you visited me.'" Matthew 25:34-36
- Action: Asbury is a church that cares by doing
. "Jesus came and told his disciples, 'I have been given complete
authority in heaven and on earth. Therefore, go and make disciples
of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and
the Son and the Holy Spirit. Teach these new disciples to obey
all the commands I have given you. And be sure of this: I am with
you always, even to the end of the age.'" Matthew 28:18-20
- Acceptance: All of God's people are welcome
to join our church family. There are no entrance requirements
other than a desire to serve God. "So accept each other just as
Christ has accepted you; then God will be glorified." Romans 15:7
- Accountability/Commitment: We are a church
that believes that we are all accountable to utilize the time,
talent and treasure God has given us to make a difference. We
make commitments and then follow through to produce results. "Don't
copy the behavior and customs of this world, but let God transform
you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you
will know what God wants you to do, and you will know how good
and pleasing and perfect his will really is." Romans 12:2
